Website Design FAQ

Only $150 for a website? Really?

Absolutely. I’m a writer. A broke writer, like I’m sure many of you are. When I started my first website five years ago, I didn’t have the time to learn how to properly design a site. I picked a WordPress theme that caught my eye (it was hideous), stuck it up with some content, and called it good.

I see a lot of writers elect to use free website services, and it makes me nervous. If you don’t own your website, you ultimately don’t have full control. If that company decides to remove your site, there’s not much you can do about it (and I’ve seen that happen before). Also, a self-hosted domain (yourname.com) looks more professional than youname.blogger.com. Let your readers (and prospective agents and publishing companies) know that you are serious about your writing career!

WordPress is easy to use, once you have a theme in place, but sometimes, it’s easier to let someone else do the installation and customization work, just to get you started. That’s what I offer. You’ll have a professional website to help you promote your writing, but because it is a less complex site (so it takes less time to design), I can charge less.

What if I want a different theme than the ones you recommend?

That’s fine! I’m happy to set up the theme of your choice and customize it based on your preferences, depending on the customization options available through the theme itself.

Some themes and some customization projects require more work than others. If your project moves beyond the scope offered for $150, we’ll work out a new payment that reflects both the additional work and your budget.

How long will it take?

In most cases, your website will be up and running within 48 hours after I receive payment and your hosting/domain information, not counting weekends and holidays. If I am backed up with orders, and I anticipate a longer delay (of a couple of days, at most), I will do my best to notify you as soon as I get your order.

What is the basic header?

I am not a graphic designer. I’m a girl who has a basic working knowledge of Photoshop. If you provide a logo, professional picture, or even an idea of what you would like, I can put something together. If you want something more detailed, you may want to consider hiring a graphic designer to do the work for you, and I will put it into place when that work is done.

What about website updates?

Most WordPress updates are easy. WordPress provides tutorials for updating and basic maintenance in their Codex.  If you need assistance, please contact me, and I will be glad to quote a price depending on your exact needs.

Who do you recommend for hosting and domain services (and just what are they)?

Before I design your site, I need to have access to your hosting and domain service. The domain is the actual address of your website. A hosting service provides a place for you to set your domain. It’s like purchasing a piece of land (hosting) and then putting your home (domain) on top of it. You need both.

I purchase all of my domains from GoDaddy, and host my sites through HostGator. Both sites have coupons, and it’s always worth it to do a quick search for available discounts before you get started.
